Roche Harbor Resort and Marina is situated on the north end of beautiful San Juan Island and has become one of the most popular boating destinations in the San Juan Islands. Roche Harbor is a favorite “get away” vacation destination for visitors who come back time after time. This privately owned resort has restaurants, a large marina, private air strip, beautiful gardens, and many gift shops to enjoy. The historic lime quarries and kilns can be viewed on a walk around the resort and trails lead into the lime quarries.
The story of Roche Harbor began over 200 years ago, in 1787, when Captain de Haro and crew became the first Europeans to sail among the San Juan Islands. Haro Strait, dividing the United States from Vancouver Island, derives its name from the Spanish explorer.
The village of Roche Harbor and famous Hotel de Haro was built in 1886 for the Roche Harbor Lime and Cement Company. The hotel was built around a log bunkhouse and the original logs used to build it can still be seen from inside the hotel. In the late 1800’s, the Roche Harbor Lime & Cement Company was known as “The Largest Limeworks West of the Mississippi.” President Theodore Roosevelt and John Wayne liked to stay at the Hotel de Haro.
In recent years, the resort is becoming more of a village. The Master Plan for Roche Harbor is a conscientious design based on a series of town planning principles which encourage not only a sense of place and historical perspective, but also to promote a healthy community void of rural sprawl. The primary objective is a town with a center and an edge that takes no more than five minutes to traverse by foot. This principle allows the design to grow from within and encourages pedestrian and community activity. Click here for complete details on the theme and design of the new development.
